Where life begins Iceland is alive. The vulcanic activity, geothermo activity, its moon- and marslike surface and the hot and frozen soils makes you feel you are in the delivery room of life. Here some photographs.

2008 CHALLENGE: GOOGLE ICELAND BY FOOT

22 DAYS. 500 KM AND A COMPASS.


THE CHALLENGE Google Earth by foot. In august 2008 I want to cross Iceland by foot from Vik in the south-east to Husavik in the upper north. A 500 km journey I want to cross in 22 days, navigated with Google Earth and GPS.

THE BASICS The idea is to cross Iceland with only a backpack and navigation tools. There are no stops in villages or other places to refuel, so I have to carry all my needs (including food) for the full 22 days on my back.

FOOTPRINTS If I can navigate with Google Earth and GPS, others must be able to follow my footprints through the same devices. Therefore I want to daily publish video, photo's and other data on Google Earth.

TAKE THE IDEA To complete this mission I would like to share this challenge with about 5 other people. If you are interested in joining me, please leave a note.

The Iceland expedition 2008

In 2005, after my first trekking over Iceland, I developed the idea to cross the country from the south-east to the north.

On this route are some trails, but we mainly have to navigate with compass. The hardest part of the hike will be the crossing of the ice-cap of Vatnajokull, where volcanic eruptions in 1996 and 2004 created some deep scarfes which might be hard to pass. Altough I've planned to make this hike in August the circumstances can be harsh. Click on the picture below for the planned route.
