September 26 The Iceland expedition 2008In 2005, after my first trekking over Iceland, I developed the idea to cross the country from the south-east to the north.
On this route are some trails, but we mainly have to navigate with compass. The hardest part of the hike will be the crossing of the ice-cap of Vatnajokull, where volcanic eruptions in 1996 and 2004 created some deep scarfes which might be hard to pass. Altough I've planned to make this hike in August the circumstances can be harsh. Click on the picture below for the planned route. In the left menu you find information about Iceland in pictures and figures. Ice and fireA short clip in which you see a glacier tongue next to a steaming hot pot.
Volcanic eruption on Vatnajokull 2004In 2004 the Grimsvotn volcano under the biggest ice-cap of Europe, the Vatnajokull, came to an eruption and left some deep scarfes to cross over. Watch the video here.
